Community Service
Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
KIDS SAFETY VILLAGE OF DURHAM REGION
Another interesting project launched by the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood in co-operation with the Optimist Club of Ajax and the Durham Region Police is the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region. The million dollar miniature mock-village, staffed and operated by the Durham Region Police, was opened in September 1995. To date, more than fifteen thousand children between kindergarten and Grade 3 have been able to learn street safety in a controlled environment. In 2014-15, we helped to complete the renovation and expansion of the Kids Safety Village for the next 20 years with a new classroom and a complete makeover of the site.
ENVIRONMENT
The Rotary Club Oshawa-Parkwood has also demonstrated concern for the environment. The Rotary Club supports the Groundwater Festival held annually at Camp Samac in Oshawa, when local elementary school students learn about the effects on the environment, in the natural settings of The Camp, in the north end of the City. The Club has also been strong supporters of the Friends of the Second Marsh by paying for many of the signs that are seen by visitors to The Second Marsh. The Club has participated in the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup by cleaning up litter along the Oshawa Creek in the Oshawa Botanical Gardens .
SKATE-A-THON
In 1980, we started an annual Rotary Skate-a-thon to raise funds for The Rotary Club service projects and to help hockey clubs and skating organizations raise money for themselves. Organized in partnership with the Oshawa Ice Advisory Council, the event involves the participation of Oshawa Minor Hockey , Oshawa Church Hockey, and Oshawa Ringette teams, and Oshawa Figure Skating Club , the Speed skating club, and The Durham Dragons (a group of mentally challenged hockey players). For 33 years, it was the longest running Skate-a-thon in Canada. Not only did the project raise more than $499,000 for the support of the participating teams and organizations and the many community service projects sponsored by The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, but the project also served to give the young participants a sense of supporting not only their sports but also the community at large.
