 Special Guest Speaker – Elizabeth Fernandez.

Elizabeth took us on a guided tour of the Simcoe Hall Settlement House.  Besides the main room used for distributing daily parcels of groceries and miscellaneous household necessities she showed us the other rooms containing back up supplies for this purpose.  She noted that there are 15,000 people/families that require assistance in the Oshawa area.

She showed us a picture of the gymnasium last Christmas.  It contained 1,500 holiday baskets of food and in each was a food voucher for a turkey.  Without the help of volunteers, they are unable to accomplish this feat.

She explained that the other food distribution facilities work with Simcoe Hall to ensure that the food is distributed fairly.

This facility caters to preschoolers, kids in school and seniors.  They were the foundation for the Girls and Boys Club of Oshawa and the Grandview Facility for developmentally challenged kids. Simcoe Hall has been operating since 1928.

They offer an after school program whereby kids can use the gym, do their homework in a study room, and enjoy snacks.

This goes on 5 days a week and on two of these days they can also get dinner.  All for $5 per week.

Hilda introduced and thanked Elizabeth.

The club enjoyed a catered dinner in the room used to host seniors every Friday … kind of appropriate.

Next meeting:  Tuesday Oct 24 at the Oshawa  Golf Club.   Club Forum with the emphasis on Community Service.

President Alan adjourned the meeting.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
