WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

 

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders. 

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community. 

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

 

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

Land Acknowledgement

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

Sadly Alan Nason passed away on Monday June 12, a few days before his 88th Birthday; a dedicated Rotarian and good friend ; may he Rest in Peace. Alan’s obituary is at the end of this bulletin.

Dave Andrews was still very happy to be named Senior of the Year 2023 by the City of Oshawa and thanked everyone for coming to the  Oshawa Senior Community Centre’s Gala event on Thursday June 8. Thank you to Robert Kipling for taking the photos and recording the speech. He also recorded Rotarians dancing as swell. We cannot create a YouTube of the Dance (copyright on the music) . the file is 105 mb – too big to share. If I can find a way to make it smaller , I will forward later.

 

GUEST SPEAKERS:  LINDA PORRITT, SUE MACKINNON, AND HILDA FINNIGAN – 2023-24 VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR ROTARY CLUB

Incoming President Linda Porritt, Secretary Sue McKinnon and Club Admin Director Hilda Finnigan reviewed the income our Club receives from Fundraising efforts and how this affects our ability to support the needs of our own community as well as international requests.

  • Bingo approximately $19,000.00/year

  • Reverse Draw/Silent Auction approximately $20,000.00

  • Tulip Sales support Polio Eradication

  • Cakes/Hams, Compost, Birdhouses,Yard Sale generates income for Club Administration

Although we are small in numbers of active members we are dynamic and productive and should be very proud of our accomplishments.

In order to continue in this manner we need all members to participate not only in our fundraising efforts but also in the day to day/week to week functions of our Club.  Volunteers are needed for the following events:

  • Bingo – two matinee sessions per month/four volunteers per session

  • Kids Safety Village – Hallowe’en, Christmas and Easter

  • Compost Sales at Market every Saturday Mid May to Mid October

  • Selling Cakes/Hams 

  • Reverse Draw Planning and at the event

  •   To support club function we need volunteers for Bulletin (a sheet passed around) thanks to those who volunteered; for Sgt. At Arms; for Front Desk;
  • Last but not least we need volunteers for Committees (each Rotarian should volunteer for two committees – Community Service, International Service, Public Image; Club Administration, Membership, Rotary Foundation

President Robbie closed the meeting at 8:05 pm.

It is with our deep regret that we announce the passing of fellow Rotarian nad friend to all of us, Alan Nason passed away on Monday night June 12, 2023.

 

June 19th 1936-June12th 2023  - Alan passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday June 12th 2023 at Hillsdale Estates Oshawa in his 87th year. Cherished and beloved husband of 64 years to Margaret.

Alan will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children Timothy Nason(Patti), Elizabeth Cooper(Brad) and Siobhan Bourque(Paul) his grandchildren Robert Nason,Kristin Hullibarger (Alec), Tyler Cooper(Emily),Brittany Aucoin(Connor), Aidan and Zachary Bourque; Great grandchildren Karter and Payton Hullibarger, Mila Cooper and Grier Aucoin.

Alan was retired from a long career as a nurse and administrator at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, a talented artist,a lover of golf and a proud Rotarian.

 There will be no funeral as per his request.

 A special Thank you to the staff of Trillium trails at Hillsdale Estates. Donations to the Alzheimer society instead of flowers would be appreciated by the family
