THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Will Lutchford expressed thanks to volunteers who assisted as more than 6500 people attended the annual Easter Eggstravaganza  at the Kids Safety Village April 7 & 8.  

2. Ted indicated he was a getting nervous about the lack of silent auction items received so far. THERE IS ONLY ONE MONTH LEFT. Get you items to Ted and Dave if even by email  so we know how many we have and can start processing them for the auction.

3. LInda announced that we will have our Club Membership Committee meeting ON APRIL 18 at 8 pm.

4. Sue also announced that the Next Board meeting will be on April 12 by Zoom at 7 PM so Robbie can participate

5. Hilda Finnigan:  -  Manure Sales are coming in;

6. Hilda Finnigan - North Oshawa Farmers Market opens May 13^th ;

7. Hilda Finnigan:-  we have been accepted for the Peony Festival June 10/11; will be needing volunteers for all of these three events

9. Dave also encouraged members to attend the upcoming District Assembly on May 6 at Centennial College Event Centre. You must register online on the district website at : https://rotary7070.org/event/district-assembly/ ). Details will be available soon. The club will pay the registration fee ($50 per person) . We encourage the 2023-24 Board of Directors and every member to sign up.

10. Dave A now has tickets for this year’s REVERSE DRAW on May 11 Tickets are $150. The increase in price is mainly due to an increase in the cost of the meal. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors. Get your tickets from Dave. Over 90 tickets out so far.  Dave A. encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Take a photo of the item, get a retail value and send to Dave A so he can add to the website and social media. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

11. APR 21 – Waverly Public School Play Day – New Playground equipment will officially open. Larry Hurren is working with Sherri Parr to determine go over the details of the Grand Opening of the playground equipment.

12. Dave also reminded everyone about the APR 27  - Rotary Club of Oshawa First Annual President’s Dinner at Parkwood Estate – Reception at 6:30 pm Dinner at 7:30 pm, Cost $150 per person. Purchase deadline is April 19.Proceeds to Rotary Club’s Charitable Fund in honour of the Club surpassing 100 years of service and over 80 years of support to 151Chadburn Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets. 13.  In May, District is having a Rotary Youth leadership Symposium. The 2023 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) is taking place, May 11-14, 2023 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 17-23 and will offer an inspiring program including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival and GPS Geocache adventures along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!! All this for only $375 per participant which covers all programs, accommodation, and meals. We have selected Morgan Joy and she has applied to be our candidate. Morgan has assisted our club at the Farmers Market, at Kids Against Hunger, and on the Great Lakes Cleanup, just to name a few. Still some spots available. If you know of another candidate, there is a form to fill out (see the District 7070 March Newsletter for details).

15. APR 20 – YUK YUK’s Comedy Night - 67 Simcoe St N, Oshawa, ON L1G 4S3 - $30 per person. 8 pm to 9:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00 pm. 50-50 Draw. All Durham Region Rotary Clubs have been invited. Fundraiser for Denise House

16. Dave passed around the sign up sheet for members, their guests and family to sign up for the APR 22 – EARTH DAY– Great Lakes Water Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Second Marsh with Oshawa and Courtice  Rotary Clubs. Please let Dave know as soon as possible if you are attending. If you want a Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup T Shirt, the cost is $15 each. Order must be placed with Dave by March 31. The T shirt you got last year is also great to wear on this day. Bring your own water (in a reusable bottle) and a picker if you have one. Wear boots. It will be wet walking. 9 Civic Leaders so far will be attending. Park along Col Sam Drive near Second marsh sign (on south side of road).

Several Happy Bucks were paid, this Editor did not get the names straight!!!

Members welcomed our KSV partners/thankful for a very successful Easter Extravaganza  expressing appreciation for the volunteers.

Hilda happy that that her daughter’s cancer has a positive plan for treatment.

GUEST SPEAKER:   Vanessa Ford, Durham Regional Police Service at The Kids Safety Village.

Lennis Trotter introduced our Guest Speaker, KSV Officer Sgt Vanessa Ford.

Vanessa spoke enthusiastically about her role at the Village.  She noted the changes made so that the Village was functional during COVID restrictions.  Some of these changes (virtual access) have been maintained as reopening to on site classes has proven difficult for some schools. Buses/bus drivers are always available and are costly. 

A summer program and some night classes have been initiated with great success and will be continued. 

A good rapport has developed with the school next door and programs such as videos are shared as well as an opportunity for students to make up community service hours required for their graduation.

Vanessa is planning to develop programs which will teach students how to avoid being attracted by information that leads to human trafficking. This will also involve working with Victim Services and will expand the KSV programs to include Grades 7/8.

Questions/Comments from members included “firecracker”safety which Vanessa will discuss with the Fire Departments who are involved in the Village classes. 

There was also a suggestion to consider adding “food venders” to some events. This latter is also under consideration.

Sue McKinnon thanked Vanessa for her presentation and her enthusiastic approach to her work at the Village.
