R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Neil Phillips - Rotary Club of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community. It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Ted Morrison at 905-623-3810. You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

See: http://video.rotary.org/EgFi/ia17-people-of-action-public-image-campaign-launch-joe-otin/

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRESENTATIONS AT OUR CLUB BUSINESS MEETING:

Janice - announced the City of Oshawa is hosting a Communities with Brooms event, on Wednesday, April 25. It is an initiative organized by the City (with the support of the BIA) every year and this is the 10th year for the program. There are numerous volunteers who join with staff from the City to generally pick up garbage around Downtown, along the creek etc. At the end of the 2 hour activity, Colin Carrie's office hosts a bbq for all to enjoy.VP Linda had asked Garth Johns (Executive Director of the Downtown Oshawa BIA) if the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood could focus their attention on the park across the Creek from Childrens' Arena. This is absolutely acceptable. It just requires a registration with the John Howard Society so we know who is working where and we don't end up with 2 or 3 different groups in one area bumping into each other. The clean-up is from 11am to 1pm, on the east side of the Oshawa Creek in the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens. Plan to meet at 10:30 and Linda will arrange to get the garbage bags and gloves, etc. And we have a BBQ to follow afterwards, sponsored by Colin Carrie. Be sure to wear 'Rotary' clothing. This is a great Hands-On Service we can do together. Please let Janice know if you (and your family member) can help. For details , see: https://downtownoshawa.ca/pec-events/communities-with-brooms and https://www.oshawa.ca/things-to-do/community-clean-up.asp

Lennis - provided an update on the Safety Village. The Kids Safety Village Board and Committee visited the village on Monday evening, March 26 to review the progress of the renovation and expansion. The outside is complete, plumbing is roughed in and there is a $40,000 shortfall! If you know of anyone who can make donations to the Safety Village and wishes to be recognized for teir contribution, please let Lennis know. The grand re-opening will be after mid-September.

Lennis – On May 8 at 5:15 pm, Past District Governor Lars Henriksson, who is also our Rotary Foundation District 7070 Grants Committee chair, will be at a photo op and will present the District Grant to the 10 Durham Region Rotary Presdients which will be used towards the rennovation and expansion of the Kids' Safety Village. Following the presentation, Lars will be attending the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, to formally present the cheque to the Rotary Club. The Durham Region Rotary Club Presidents have also been invited to attend the photo op and the meeting, if they wish. And we have already received some favourable responses, including one from our District Governor Nominee Beth Selby. The speaker that evening will be members of our Reverse Draw Committee going over the final last-minute items for the May 10 Reverse Draw, Dinner & Silent Auction evening at the Oshawa Golf Club.

VP Linda - reminded us all about the Leading Women, Leading Girls – Building Communities awards for two member of our Rotary family – Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood Director of Service Kim Boatman and President of the Rotaract Club of Durham College-UOIT Carolina Rodriquez. Both were nominated by the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, for their exceptional leadership, breaking barriers, displaying diversity and being a positive role model, and passion to serve others in our community. The presentationof the awards will be done by MPP Jennifer French on April 3 from 6 to 8pm at the downtown branch at the Oshawa Public Library. If you would like to attend, Please visit Eventbrite to register, and feel free to forward the information to any other guests you would like to bring with you that evening. If you cannot register on Eventbrite, please contact Vice President Linda.

REMINDER: In honour of these two recipients, our Rotary Club Meeting on April 3 has been cancelled so that our Club members can attend.

Sonja Thompson - Chair of our Youth Services Committee, reminded us all that our regular dinner meeting on April 3 is cancelled at the Oshawa Golf Club. We are all encouraged to attend the awards ceremony on the library. If you would like to meet for dinner at 4pm , somewhere in Oshawa, prior to the 6 pm ceremony, please let Sonja know as soon as possible so that she can arrange a place.

Dave - Reverse Draw –May 10 is fast approaching Tickets have been printed . It is Time to SELL - Last year we had 125 people for dinner, with 156 tickets being sold in total. This year the ticket is $125. We need YOU to help sell more tickets this year and get more Silent Auction Items to reach the profit levels that our members said was our top fundraising priority in our Visioning Exercise and also in our Strategic Plan.

THERE WILL BE ANOTHER A REVERSE DRAW COMMITTEE MEETING ON APRIL 10 AT 8:00 PM AT THE OSHAWA GOLF CLUB.

Dave – With the Reverse Draw on May 10 fast approaching, we want to highlight our Silent Auction items on our Club's Facebook page and on our club website. We need your help. Dave passed around sample posteres that are already on our club website www.rotaryoshawa-parkwood.org for you to review. When you get a Silent Auction item, take a real nice photo, get a detailed description of the item , get the name and all of the particulars about the sponsor, and get the info to Dave as soon as possible. Before our club can commit, we need you and your family to commit to host a student. That is our first step. Details on the Youth Exchange program can be found on the District website at http://www.yepd7070.org/

Bob Koski’s two daughters and grand-daughters were visiting the Aquarium and while they were there, a young lad fell into the water. Bob’s daughter and grand-daughter assisted in the rescue.

Linda was happy to attend, on March 27, the official opening of the Centre for Craft Brewing Innovation (CCBI) at the Whitby campus of Durham College, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood. It is located in the same building as Bistro 67. Consisting of a pilot brew line and brew lab, the CCBI offers craft brewers access to expertise and state-of-the-art technology, as well as micro-analytical and research services. Linda sampled two new beers at the event. Growing hops now.

Lennis - A butcher in Port Perry is offering to donate $25.00 to the Port Perry hospital for each box of steaks sold.

Larry had a wonderful vacation in Portugal and Spain. He was happy to see Rotary signs, not too many others. However, on the way back, Lufthansa was the airline, and it was superior to Air Canada. Larry also received his gift card from Loblaw’s.

Dave remembers Bob Rankine holding up a post for most of the evening. We all knew how to have a good time back then.

Lennis was just happy.

Mike was on vacation in Dominican Republic and told us that Sea Bass had a horrible name years ago. So horrible that no one wanted to eat it so the name was changed.

Devon had a wonderful trip to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal.

Bob Stewart was happy that free daycare may be close to happening. Something he really needs.

Janice loves Rotary and loves Canada

Sonja was happy that Janice was happy!
