The Rotary Inetrnational Theme for Ocotber is Economic and Community Development, one of the Rotary Foundation's 6 Areas of Focus. Simon Gill is the Manager of Business Development and Investment Attraction with the Region of Durham Economic Development & Tourism Department. Simon leads the implementation of the Region’s Foreign Direct Investment Attraction strategy by marketing and providing advisory services to foreign companies seeking to invest in the Region, contributing to job creation and economic growth and prosperity in Durham. Simon previously worked at Ontario Power Generation as the Corporate Business Development lead for new wind and solar generation projects, and prior to that, as the National Manager of Business Development and as project execution lead for a global solar electricity project developer, overseeing acquisitions, and project portfolio construction budgets of $850M. |

World Polio Day - Broadcast Live from Durham College's New Global Classroom

Joint meeting of Durham Region Rotary Clubs at the new Global Classroom in the new Centre for Collaborative Education at Durham College where we will celebrate World Polio Day with leaders from around the world. Cash bar and sandwiches will be served. Cost $25 per person (portion will be donated to The Rotary Foundation's Polio Eradictaion and credited to your next Paul Harris Fellow. Spouses invited. We are asking all 10 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region to cancel the weekly meetings this week and instead, attend, with their spouses, this World Polio Day Event in the new Global Classroom, in the new Centre for Collaborative Education Building at Durham College, 2000 Simcoe St. N., Oshawa, ON, Canada L1G 0C5 . The event, hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood, will run from 5 pm to about 9 pm. There will be a 45 minutes reception from 5 to 5:45 pm and there will be a cash bar. This will be an opportunity to visit with fellow Rotarians and share with them our great desire to eradicate polio from the world. Light lunch will be served. Cost of the event will be $25.00 per person and a portion of the ticket price will be a donation to the Rotary Foundations' End Polio Campaign. That portion, going to The Rotary Foundation, will be credited to each Rotaria's next Paul Harris Award. The capacity will be 200 and it will be on a first come first served registration . The Global Classroom has the ability to receive and send out the Rotary livestream feed (from 6 pm to 6:45 pm) featuring Rotarians and their Global Polio Eradication initiative Partners (as we have done for the last few years). This feed would be made available to all Rotary Clubs in District 7070 and may also be able to be broadcast to colleges and universities worldwide on the Durham College network. Rotary Foundation Peace Scholar Program

Chenai Kadungure -a Rotary Peace Scholar - from Zimbabwe Chenai has been involved in non-profit work since she was a teenager. In high school she was an Interact member. Interact taught her the value in “Service Above Self” and this attraction to serving the world has never left her. Chenai earned her undergraduate and master’s degree in Cape Town, where her experience of xenophobia inspired her to become a part of the solution to global conflict. She has experience in research and customer relations and has strong interpersonal skills. She has fundraised for philanthropic initiatives, and assisted NGOs, such as Open Door Education, Cycle For Understanding and The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). As a dedicated soldier for peace; Chenai volunteers for The Red Frogs, has been involved in various church leadership activities, serves on the Board of Directors of Mwala, a charity organization and she mentors in her spare time. She most recently worked for a non-profit called The Hope Factory, an Enterprise Development company owned by The South African institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) which grows people, to develop businesses and impact communities. She is committed to being “a gift to the world” and the Fellowship to study at UNC-Chapel Hill, is just the beginning for her. Chenai holds a B.A. degree in Media, Sociology and Gender Studies and an M.Phil. in Diversity Studies from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She is currently conducting her M.A. studies in Global Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she aims to obtain the necessary skills to succeed in the international development space.
