From The Bulletin Editor: The Meal was a true FEAST. Fresh Caesar Salad paired with a Garden Salad that looked to be out of a gourmet’s Garden. A Vegetable Medley was unnecessary but much appreciated as was the Cauliflower Gratin and Cheese Canneloni. The Bacon and Mushroom Alfredo was popular and the ‘Perfect’ Penne with Meat Sauce was ‘perfectly ‘ al dante and screamed Italy with the Feast finishing off with Veal Parmesan that caused many a face to break out in Rotary smiles. The Rotary Meals at the Oshawa Golf Club have been truly delectable in the Buffet Format. Thank you Oshawa Golf Club.

Oshawa Past President Ron Dick – invited all 3 clubs to the November 21 Night of a Thousand Dinners at the Officers' Mess of the Ontario Regiment starting at 6:30 pm. Cist $75per person. Proceeds to Canadian Landmines Foundation. Speaker: Hon. David Collenette, former Government of Canada Minister of National Defence, Vetrans Affairs, and Transportation. Tickest are avaiable from Ron (email: ron@rrdfsi.ca or phone 905-728-4550). Many Rotary Clubs, right across Canada contribute annually to the CanadianLandmines Foundation by hosting Night of a Thousand Dinners. Please contact Ron if your Rotary Club wants to partner with the Oshawa Rotary Club.

Oshawa President Kevin Harding - reminded everyone that there would be no regular meeting on Monday Thanksgiving Day .

Oshawa Rotarian Tom Hodgson – a memebr of the club for more than 40 years has produced a real collectors item - the Directory of the Rotary Club of Oshawa - now in its 99^th year (Your editor thinks that there just might be the odd charter member , still around). Tom has been the creator of this masterpiece for many years . Taking the reins from Rotarian Bill Alger, many years ago. Tom presented a copy to District Governor Mary Lou Harrison.

Oshawa Rotarian Donna Doherty – who is also the Senior Development Officer at Trent University, encourage the Rotary Clubs to attend a community information meeting/survey at the Trent University, Oshawa Campus Wednes Oct 3 or Thursday Oct 4.

Oshawa Rotary Past President Mike Uphoff - announced that the two Oshawa Clubs plan to collaborate on a joint Youth Exchange. They have been reviewing candidates for the outbound Exchange Program and also looking for 4 host families families, for our inbund Exchange Student. If you know of a potential family, please contact Mike or Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian , Youth Service Chair, Sonya Thompson.

Oshawa President Kevin Harding – presented to Jay Cannings of the Oshawa Rotary Club(also their incoming President), a plaque for being Rotarian of the Month . Well deserved, Jay.

Bowmanville President John Burns – announced the Bob Stevens, now over 90 years old, (who came to our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood on many occasions), who was Past President of Bowmanville in 1966-67, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow clebrated today, his 67 years as a Rotarian. Truly amazing.

Bowmanville Rotarian Joe Solway (son of radio personality, actor and broadcaster Larry Solway) announced that the Bowmanville Rotary Club is having 2 Variety Shows (music, song, dance, magic and conedy) on Dec. 16 at Bowmanville High School, with proceeds going to the Feed The Need, a charity that all three clubs support. The shows are “The Sounds of the Saeson” . Tickets are $25 each. If you know of any local talent , please give Joe a call.

Our Past District 7070 Governor Ted - thanked everyone for attending anc contributing to the Rotary Foundation Walk in Kleinberg at the McMichael Gallery. If you have signed a pledge sheet, be sure to give your money to our Treasurer Devon Biddle as soon as you can. Lots of great photos on our District 7070 Facebook Page. Everyone enjoyed the leisurely morning as we toured the grounda and the gallery at the renoun McMichael Art Gallery., and went on the structured 2km or 5km walk. Over $100,000 was raised for the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund.

Past Pres Dave Andrews – World Polio Day 2018, hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood, will be held right on the date, Wednesday October 24, 2018 at Durham College in the new Global Classroom of the new Centre for Collaborative Education. So far the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa, Oshawa-parkwood, port Perry and Port Hope have canceled their regular weekly meetings that week. Dave urged everyone to attend this grand event. Please register here at the District Website, as soon as you can. All of the Clubs in Durham Region have been invited and urged to register as soon as possible. The cost for the event will be $25 with a portion of the ticket price going to the Rotary Foundation's PolioPlus Program and will be credited towards your next Paul Harris Fellow. A light luncheon will be served and there will be a cash bar. There will be a fellowship time from 5:00 pm to 5:45pm followed by a welcome from Durham College and from Rotary District Governor Mary Lou Harrison. At 5:45pm, we will feed in the live stream Rotary Polio Program, live from Philadelphia this year from 6 to 6:45 pm . We will then continue to broadcasting live from Oshawa. During this live Oshawa portion, the two Rotary Club Presidents from Oshawa will receive their Proclamations from the Mayor of Oshawa, and the 10 Rotary Club Presidents and District Governor Mary Lou Harrison will receive their Proclamations from the Chair of the Regional Municipality of Durham. Dr. Bob Scott, the immdeiate Past Chair of the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee will bring us up to date and hoepfully , bring in some of his associates from the Polio stricken countries , again, live. Questions and answers will follow and then an after-party, finishing at 9 pm. The entire event will also be available, by computer, through a URL for any Rotary Club in the world to view. In addition, the broadcast will be sent live all over the world, to the colleges and universities on the Durham College Global Classroom network.

Past District Governor Ted - announced that the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood will have, as our guest speaker, a Rotary PeaceScholar, at our November 13 Rotay Club meeting, as part of our Rotary Foundation Month activities in November. Ted asked the othe clubs to please let Dave Andrews know if you wish to attend and perhaps bring a guest.

Oshawa Rotarian Tess Pierce – The Oshawa Rotary Club has secured 10 tickets to the musical “Billy Bishop Goes to War” for October 25. Oshawa Rotarian Tess Pierce - UOIT Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities  has confirmed their Dean’s Lecture Series speaker, Gwynne Dyer for Wednesday, October 17th, 7 p.m. at The Regent.  The title of the talk/event is THE POPULIST REVOLT: Its Causes and Cure. Gwynne Dyer, OC is a London-based independent Canadian journalist, syndicated columnist and military historian. Dyer was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador (then the Dominion of Newfoundland) and joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve at the age of sixteen. While still in the naval reserve, he obtained a BA in history from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1963; an MA in military history from Rice University in Houston, Texas, in 1966; and a PhD in military and Middle Eastern history at King's College London in 1973. Dyer served in the Canadian, American and British naval reserves. He was employed as a senior lecturer in war studies at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, 1973–77. In 1973 he began writing articles for leading London newspapers on the Arab-Israeli conflict, and soon decided to abandon academic life for a full-time career in journalism. Past District Governor Neil Phillips – announced that the Council of Past Governros of District 7070 met and selected to award one Rotarian in District 7070, who gave us the greatest service contribution in 2017-18 to Fred Mandryk, Past President of the Bowmanville Rotary Club for his contribution to the Kids Against Hunger program. Millions of meals have been packed and disctibuted to children all over the world and even here in Canada. Thanks to Fred's hard work with Rotary Clubs all over Ontario. Well done Fred.

REMINDER: Past Pres Lennis Trotter – has two remaining Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood logo hats for sale $20 each. Please let him know if you care to purchase one or both. They will be perfect for the Rotary Foundation Walk.

Please volunteer your time and talents to the growth of our Rotary Club. We have a membership Plan. We have a Strategic Plan. We need your help to make them work.

REMINDER: Treasurer Devon Biddle announced that our annual club dues invoice will be sent to us by email BUT you can pay right now at the front Registration Desk. Dues are $210 for the year (may be paid now or one half now and one half Jan 1, 2019). On the invoice , there will be a voluntary contribution of $100 for the Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund and $20 for Polio Eradication, if you so desire to pay, and Devon will ensuire that you get credit towards your next Paul Harris Fellow Award. Spouses may pay $165 annual dues for their membership, as long as one spouse pays the $210. You can start paying TODAY at the front Registration Desk, when you come in to the meeting. Invoices will be emailed shortly.

GUEST SPEAKERS : District Governor Mary Lou Harrison – Her official Visit to the Three Rotary Clubs

DG Mary Lou Harrison was introduced by Assistant Governor of our three Rotary Clubs, Roger Tessier.

Mary Lou is the daughter of a Rotarian and a Rotary Ann. Her father, Don Foster, is still an active member of the Rotary Club of Toronto West. She grew up volunteering at Rotary events and projects of all sorts. Her early exposure to the wider Rotary family included hosting exchange students attending the Rotary International Convention in Toronto in 1983.

A strong advocate for the role of women in Rotary, Mary Lou renewed her relationship with Rotary after watching a TV interview with female members of the Rotary Club of Parkdale-High Park about the creation of The Redwood Shelter.

However, she didn’t join Rotary until several years later when someone asked her. Thank you to Rotarian Scott Allison. Mary Lou is a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise, and an active member of the Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise. This in no way means that she is a morning person!

Her district roles have included the positions of Assistant Governor, Vocational Service Chair, Co-Chair of RADAR (Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Responses), and membership on the Communications Team. She can often be found on an event planning committee (Rotary Foundation Walk, Rotary AIDS Walk, District Conferences, Peace Conference etc.) and/or behind the camera capturing wonderful Rotary moments to feed social media.

Mary Lou is proud to be a Rotary Foundation Benefactor and gives monthly through Rotary Direct, an easy way to support the amazing work of our Rotary Foundation, here in our District and around the world. It’s one of her goals to increase the number of Rotarians donating through this easy recurring giving program.

Currently, Mary Lou is the Parish Administrator at St. Anne’s Anglican Church, a national historic site, active church, and performing arts venue in downtown Toronto. Her work life has included positions in the Ontario government as an Arts Consultant, her own catering and events management company, teaching cooking, freelance writing, and being the editor of a community newspaper. She recently launched her own blog. You can check it out at coolnotcool.ca !

Both inside and outside of Rotary, Mary Lou seeks to be a change-maker.

Mary Lou’s Remarks:

Firstly, Mary Lou thanked eveyone in the room for the work that we do, here locally and all around the world. She also thanked the many Rotarians in the room for their commitment to serving and to those who have served at the District and Zone levels of Rotary, for their dedication. This is where Rotary's leadership begins. She challenged all of us to think about it.

She was very impressed, (at the Grand Opening) with the new Global Classroom at the new Centre For Collaborative Education at Durham College. She also thanked our many Rotary Clubs of Durham Region for their efforts and she hopes that the full $150,000 can be raised to call it the Rotary Global Classroom.

She was also very touched by the new Rainbow crosswalk in Clarington , supported by the Rotary Club of Bowmanville ins support of the LGBTQ community.

She talked about the theme selected by Rotary International Presdient Barry Rassin “Be The Inspiration” and said that we are the inspiration.

She also talked about Rotary's new vision statement, “"Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves." When you are asked about What Is Rotary, you can use just a few key words in the statement: UNITE PEOPLE; TAKE ACTION; and CREATE CHANGE. Her one word that she challenges us all with for this Rotary year is “DO”.

We CREATE CHANGE: She praised our work on the Kids Safety Village, remembering that her children both went there , when she lived in Whitby.

We UNITE PEOPLE when we go to the District Conference on Oct 26 and 27 in Wellington. Only $99 for the day. Please register today.

We DO just be looking at the new Global Classroom at Durham College, our Youth activities, the Kids Safety Village and the new rainbow crosswalk. Let's share the doing and tell everyone.

Mary Lou talked about the good we do through the grants of the Rotary Foundationand Polio Eradication . She is coming to our World Polio Day event along with attending many others during the day on October 24. She remarked that donor fatigue is nothing when you realize that volunteers, administering the vaccination are getting killed in some countries. We are counting down to history when polio will be eradicated from the world. She noted that every week, President Barry Rassin gets the numbers from the Global polio eradication Initiative. He doesnt think of the number. He thinks of the child and was that child paralized or not.

She urged us all to get online at the Rotary Foundation and sign up for Rotary Direct – the easiest way to donate - -weekly, monthly, however we choose.

We CREATE CHANGE by eradicating polio. She was one of two District Governros at the recent Zone Conference in Montreal to receive a Flamingo of Change. Look at the recent Rotarian Magazine and see the flamingos. One is pointing in the opposite direction . That one is the flamingo of change. She told us all to be Flamingos of Change.

Mary Lou said that the District, (which is made up of Rotarians just like you and me), is here to help each club and each committee. Just ask. As we all go out . Unite and create change in the world.
