OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF OSHAWA-PARKWOOD

Mailing Address: 96 KING ST. E., OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA L1H 1B6

What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Chair Linda Porritt at 905-626-6386 or our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Mike McLaren at 905-571-4222.

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

2016-2017 ROTARY THEME: “ROTARY – SERVING HUMANITY”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT: John Germ – Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tennessee,USA

R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Jim Louttit - Rotary Club of Toronto-Sunrise in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

ASSISTANT DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Beth Selby – Rotary Club of Cobourg in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build good will and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

GUEST SPEAKER:

OPG – Darlington Refurbishment

Sue McKinnon introduced the guest speaker Gary Rose – CA, BComm, Project Manager designation – Vice President of Planning and Projects for OPG, Vice Chairman of the Program Review Board, and formerly of the Finance Department

OPG produces 50% of the power in Ontario. Nuclear plants in Darlington and Pickering, and ownership of Bruce A and Bruce B, which are leased out to Bruce Power. There are also 3 thermal generating stations - “Biomass” burning station. The Biomass consumed is wood pellets. In addition, OPG owns 65 hydro stations across the province.

Gary has been working on the Darlington Refurbishment project since 2008. The Darlington nuclear generating station has been in service since 1993 and provides 25% of the province’s power. The time for refurbishing has arrived. There was a long period of planning and detailed logistical costing and preparation. During the preparation, there was an elaborate simulation environment built in south Courtice with the sole purpose of training, walking through the entire process of removing the fuel, removing the tubes, and replacing the tubes.

The OPG team then showed us a clip from the TV show “Daily Planet” that showed the training facility and some of the rigorously controlled routines and the repetitive nature of the intense training. There are right now 2,000 fully trained personnel engaged in the retubing.

Finally, in October 2016, the implementation phase was started with the shutdown of Unit 2. There are 4 Units. The project is a long one – going to the year 2026 (112 months), and the expectation of Planning and Projects is to deliver on time, on budget. It will be a 12.8 billion dollar investment.

Here is a link to the project: www.opg.com/generating-power/nuclear/stations/darlington-nuclear/darlington-refurbishment/Pages/default.aspx

Members had quite a few questions.

Pres. Dave thanked Gary and Stacey.

Pres. Dave Adjourned the meeting.

The “ideal of service” is the key.

It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next.

It is an attitude and passion we all have, as Rotarians.
