What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community. It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Ted Morrison at 905-623-3810. You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

See: http://video.rotary.org/EgFi/ia17-people-of-action-public-image-campaign-launch-joe-otin/

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

GUEST SPEAKER: Sharon Johnston – an ambassador for the CNIB

Past Pres. Larry Hurren introduced Sharon Johnston who is a CNIB Ambassador and Advocate. She  is one of 6 ambassadors for CNIB in Durham Region. Larry had driven Sharon to our meeting and was surprised at her ability to guide him in missing some of the potential heavy traffic en route. Sharon has three sons (Terry is well known in Durham Region as the voice of Durham Region on CKDO). She has worked as a bookkeeper and in Hospital Administration and currently is a member of the Social Committee at her condo in Whitby.

Sharon states that "blindness is not a disability, but rather an inability to do certain things". She is proud of the fact that she picked a day to stop driving before her doctor told her this must be so. Sharon appreciates the community spirit exhibited by Rotary/Rotarians and in particular appreciates the recent opportunity for CNIB to utilize the KSV for their fundraiser, "Nightsteps" which raised $10,000.

CNIB provides many services including both Rehabilitation and Therapy - computer courses and companionship/support. There are many ways for vision impaired folks to stay self-sufficient. Volunteers are needed for "hands-on" such as driving those who require this assistance.Can you volunteer just 4 hours a month and be a volunteer? "There is always something for someone to do". Sharon distributed several information pamphlets and other information.

The CNIB services in Durham Region are run from the Abilities Centre in Whitby. Services include programs to clients of any age affected with low or no vision * vision assessments * Vision Rehabilitation trains individuals to use various low vision aids, technical aids available for purchase * Independent Living Skills program assists clients to maintain independence, develop practical skills for daily living * Braille and keyboard training * Orientation and Mobility Instruction for travel with independence and safety * Library Services with materials on CD, materials on Braille and descriptive videos. The Whitby office is open on the second and fourth Thursday of each month 10 am-2 pm * telephone lines and programs available Mon-Fri 8:30 am-4:30 pm, by appointment only. CNIB services are available free of charge to any person experiencing difficulties as a result of vision loss, or the combined loss of vision and hearing

More is available through Sharon at mapaj2000@yahoo.ca OR cnib.ca

In answer to a question regarding donated funds being used locally, Sharon said that donations are distributed through the provincial office in Toronto and she is not able to say if there can be a designation for specific areas.

President Ted thanked Sharon for her informative presentation.
