ROTARY MOMENT   Devon Biddle told us how he got involved and has stayed involved for over 37 years; first memories of Rotary are from high school years when living in Ajax and attending functions sponsored by Rotary Clubs; had been invited to join Kiwanis but with two young children and his own business thought he was “too busy”!

He met Lennis in 1976 and was invited to Parkwood Rotary; recognized a number of members and enjoyed the scotch before a meeting “got the dust out of his mouth”!! Has now switched to wine!!

Memories include – selling tickets on a van; the challenge of getting this vehicle in and out of malls; social events; contacts in business; conferences

Served on the Board – Vice Pres., President, Secretary (for eighteen years), likes to” mind other people’s business”; now treasurer; appreciates Rotary’s focus on giving back, community and vocational service,

      Fellowship and comradrie is great “his friends are here”.

GUEST SPEAKER  :  Hilda Finnigan introduced Sue Simeson, Principal of Clara Hughes Public School

      The facts presented by Sue were astounding to many of us. Clara Hughes Public School has 550 students many of whom are living below the poverty line.  Statistics in Durham show 10%; in Oshawa 20%!!!  These children often have health problems and developmental disorders resulting in lower education and living in poverty as adults.  There are nine schools in Oshawa identified as having children in need.  At Clara Hughes the focus is to increase academic levels among the children, supporting parents to become involved, partnering with community resources and programs to accomplish this. In return children are encouraged to give back.

                         Ignite – lifelong learning; Celebrate – our community; Dream – of an empowered future

    Marsha Chambers thanked Sue for her presentation which outlined some realities for our club members.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
