ROTARY MOMENT for this meeting was the induction of a new member, Kim Boatman.
Kim and her sister Sandy McDowell own and operate The Oshawa Express newspaper, a weekly community paper in the City of Oshawa. Born in New Brunswick, both women moved to Ontario at a young age and have a strong commitment to family and community. Kim joined Sandy in the newspaper business ten years ago and together they have developed the Oshawa Express newspaper. Both are looking forward to participating in the Rotary Club of Oshawa Parkwood.
Kim was presented with her Rotary Pin and name badge. She expressed her thanks to Lennis Trotter for introducing her (and Sandy) to Rotary, stating that she is looking forward to learning more and participating in club activities. Members present welcomed Kim with a round of applause
GUEST SPEAKER : Lennis Trotter introduced Jennifer Frey from the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise who gave a presentation on membership enhancement including a short video. This outlined the need for clubs to make some adjustments in the traditional methods in order to attract and maintain young professionals in Rotary. Jennifer also noted that she was introduced to Rotary through the RYLA Program and encouraged to attend by Todd Skinner.
Jodi Hewitt introduced Kelly Lloyd who spoke about the Big Brothers/Big Sister organization. This organization focuses on children ages 6 – 18 years of age who have a need for companionship/mentoring outside of their home setting. Currently, there are approx. 350 children being mentored and some 50+ on the waiting list. 90% are boys and some have been waiting for more than 2 years. There are several programs available – the traditional 1/1 mentoring, couples for kids, in school mentoring, Big Bunch (for children on the waiting list), Go Girls and Game On (for ages 5 – 8). There is always a need for volunteers in these programs.
Marion Mills thanked Kelly for her presentation, noting the positive impact of this program for children and that some of our members have been/are involved.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
