What Is RYLA ?

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary's leadership training program for young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range. In our District 7070, the age range is 19-30. RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to: Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;  Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;  Encourage leadership of youth, by youth; and Recognize publicly young people who are performing service projects in their communities.

RYLAs often take the form of a seminar, camp, or workshop, generally 3-10 days in length, organized by Rotarians at the club, district, or multidistrict level. In our case, it is a  District program , that runs 5 days, under the leadership of PDG Mike Cooksey.

Participants are nominated and in our case, sponsored by local Rotary clubs. For these young adults, this recognition offers the opportunity to build self-confidence, gain exposure to a variety of issues and people, meet active community leaders, and learn valuable information and career skills. RYLA gives Rotarians the opportunity to mentor promising young leaders serving their own communities and beyond.

RYLA can bring new energy to a Rotary district, inspire ideas for service, increase support of community service projects, and develop future Rotarians.

Originating in 1959 in Queensland, Australia,  and RYLA was officially adopted by Rotary International (RI) in 1971. This exciting program engages Rotary clubs and districts around the world.

Through Rotarians’ constant belief in the potential of youth, RYLA has since become an opportunity to help the next generation of leaders define themselves and expand their skills. And for this reason, RYLA is a service program under Rotary’s 5th and newest avenue of service - NEW GENERATIONS, now called Youth Service.

Our District played hosted RLYANS, sponsored by Rotary Clubs May 13  -17 at Loyalist College in Belleville.

The week was facilitated by Rotarians Ric Williams of the Toronto Rotary Club.

The District 7070 RYLA program, introduces young participants and their families to the Rotary ideals of service each year.

Throughout the week, the youths engage in discussions on individual and group issues, and participate in simulated games where they learn by doing. Every year, they spend a day volunteering in the local Community with a service project.

In addition to fellowship activities, the youths enjoy a combination of structured recreational activities and lectures delivered by industry professionals. All the while, they have fun, build friendships, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

GUEST SPEAKER  :

Name of Speakers: Shelia King and Baker Baha of the Rotaract Club of UOIT / Durham College

Topic: Their RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) Experience in mid-May at Loyalist College, Belleville

Introduced by Past President  Dave Andrews

Their remarks:

RYLA gave Bake and Shelia the opportunity to hone their teamwork, leadership and interpersonal understanding , while also building strong bonds with other people. They were engaged in various workshops and activities to expand their own Comfort Zone. Some of their memorable moments included trust falls off picnic tables, learning about behavior profiles, tennis ball time trial, communication, and a ladder grid.

Bake and Shelia published a Newsletter at the end of the week and here are some items from that newsletter which they spoke about at our Rotary meeting

During the week, the participants helped plant vegetables in the Belleville Food bank garden.

Some comments from the RYLANS, “It was an eye-opening experience”. “At RYLA, I grew as a person”. “RYLA exceeded my expectations. I’ve learned a lot about myself and others”. “The laughter, smiles, and energy that exist in RYLA are what make this program phenomenal”.

All 24 participants from all over District 7070 and beyond (from Guelph to Kingston) said they would recommend RYLA to a friend.

Another comment: “A leader is someone who compels others to positive actions by the power of their own positive action”.

Ric Williams and Diane, the Rotarians that put this program together for so many years, were each presented Paul Harris Fellowship Awards for their tremendous contribution to this most successful Rotary program for Rotary’s Service to Youth – The Next Generation.

They were both warmly Thanked by Shawn Kellam.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
