AWARDS AND REMARKS:

  • Past President Jodi Hewitt received a Paul Harris Pin in recognition of her commitment to The Rotary Club of Oshawa Parkwood as President during the 2012/13 year (this was Jodi’s second  Paul Harris, the first was given in recognition of her work in the community, prior to her joining our club)
  • Pat Dyck and Lennis Trotter each received Perfect Attendance Pins (Pat for 20 yrs/Lennis for 38 yrs)
  • Lennis Trotter received a pin in recognition of his sponsoring of new members – this is a new award from RI
  • Rotarian of the Year awards were announced for Kim Boatman and Sandy McDowell in recognition of their significant contribution to our club since joining in the 2013/14 year. These will be presented at a future meeting as Kim and Sandy were not able to attend this evenings meeting.
  • Allan Finnigan was presented with his Past Presidents’ pin and thanked for his diligence as President during the 2013/14 Rotary Year.  PP Allan reviewed the clubs’ accomplishments over the past year, thanking the Board and the Committee members for their positive attitude and good decision making.  He highlighted our continued work in supporting Interactor and Rotoractor Clubs and the hosting of our first Foundation Dinner where we awarded two Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to members of our community (non Rotarians). Other highlights of the 2013/14 Rotary Year included an increase in public awareness due to more aggressive advertising and promotion, the beginning of a campaign for renewal of the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region (a joint project with the Optimist Club of Ajax), and our social activities in which a good time was had by all.  Also noted, were our six successful fundraisers which help us to have funds to support needs in our community and internationally.  Past President Allan concluded by saying that this past year had given him an opportunity to “learn the ins and outs of Rotary” as well as enjoy the success of the Rotary Club of Oshawa Parkwood in the Rotary world.
  • Incoming President Robbie Larocque was presented with his President’s pin.  He made the following remarks as he embarks on his journey as Club President.  Reflection on what he would need to know and the educational opportunities provided in preparation for this, his recent trip to the International Conference in Austrailia (along with his family), where they discovered just how small the Rotary World can be, when they met a Past District Governor from Washington whose grandfathers’ home was none other than Parkwood Estate. Robbie is prepared to “Light up Rotary” with the participation of Oshawa Parkwood members in enhancing our existing programs and investigate new opportunities so that Rotary may continue its’ positive work worldwide.  And in  the spirit of FUN, Robbie asked Elliott and Veronica to hand out a quiz which he and his family had developed pertaining to their recent visit to Australia. We did not do well in this quiz as far as getting correct answers, but WE DID HAVE FUN, as Parkwood members are known to do and prizes were awarded accordingly!?!?!

The evening ended with kudos to Past President Allan and President. Robbie, as well as Vice President Mike for his organization of this evenings event – we look forward to another great Rotary Year

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.

IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. Please mail or fax your make-ups to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
