ROTARY MOMENT It was Carol Reading’s turn to tell us “Why Rotary” for her. Carol noted that it has been eleven years, not nine as she had thought!! She knew about Rotary Pool, Rotary Park and had read in Oshawa Times, but did not really know Rotary. Was prompted by friend Marion Mills to come to Barcelona (a vacation/Rotary Convention combined). Came to a meeting Andy presiding; Devon welcoming?? Another school teacher. Joined and has felt proud of Oshawa Parkwood accomplishments – Special Olympics, supporting Settlement House and Salvation Armey, Participation House. Carol related memories of past Rotarians in our club and somehow she knows that Lennis liked to play with cars, even at the age of seven!?!?
GUEST SPEAKER : Dave A. introduced our guest speaker, Peter Butler, Head Pro at the Oshawa Golf Club for the past twelve years.
Peter also commented on the great day at the Oshawa Golf Club, having a6 time PGA Tour Champion Golfer on hand and listening to his comments about golf and getting some great tips.
Peter spoke about putting in particular giving golfers some “food for thought” about the putter and other clubs as well as stance and swing. He then proceeded outside to offer some personal attention to members who chose to participate.
Dave and Pres. Al thanked Peter for this “annual” lesson.
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
