HAPPY TOONIES: (this change being encouraged in order to supplement the financial shortfall in club funds)
☺ David Andrews is looking forward to our barbeque & get-together at Biddle’s cottage.
☺ Hilda Finniganspent two days in Welland with former classmates and had a great time.
☺ Kris sachdeva had a leaking tap in his basement…the good news is that insurance will cover the damage (but not the plumbing repair.)
☺ Larry Hurren is happy about celebrating his 40th anniversary with Kay on Aug. 3rd. Then, this past Sunday was a family celebration with about 50 people.
☺ Devon Biddle “set the scene” for our get-together and his and Linda’s cottage: zipline and axe-throwing, and anyone under 100 pounds can go in the treehouse.
☺ Alan Nason is very proud of his granddaughter who is at University in Indiana on a soccer scholarship.
☺ Al Finnigan really enjoyed the meal tonight (prime rib).
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
√ Hilda Finnigan shared two “thank you” letters to our club: Kinark Child and Family Services ($250) and Rose of Durham ($100). Also, the roster for volunteers to do the bulletin will be passed around next week.
√ Al Finnigan shared copies of Oshawa Express, with fantastic photo ops of our award to Kim Boatman and Sandy McDowell and of visit from our MP Colin Carrie to our Rotary Club. Special thanks to Kim and Sandy for this great coverage getting our Rotary story out to the public.
ROTARY MOMENT: none this meeting
GUEST SPEAKER:
Our speaker was unable to attend because of illness.
Past President Andy Lyons shared his thoughts and told us all about his and Donna’s trip to Europe with the Ontario Regiment members and their families. This trip was in honour and remembrance of the 100 year anniversary of the First World War. The group visited many sites of historical significance, and proudly represented Canada by laying wreaths, participating in remembrance ceremonies, wearing our “red & white” Canadian colours and singing our national anthem.
It was a great trip, and very emotional for all participants, largely because so many young lives were lost.
THE OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The “ideal of service” is the key. It is an attitude that does not change from one version to the next. It is an attitude we all have, as Rotarians.
IF YOU CAN’T MAKE IT, MAKE UP : Pat Dyck, our Club Secretary has a Rotary International Directory of all Rotary Clubs in the world, when and where they meet. And you can go to the www.rotary.org website and find a club or clubs where you will be travelling in the world. Please mail or fax your make-up cards to Pat Dyck, or give your make-up card to the attendance/registration officer at the next club meeting.
